Student Response System
Really Good Stuff
Kahoot is a free service that allows teachers to collect formative data in the format of a competitive game. Students are shown a question on the teacher's screen and answer on their computer or mobile device. The quicker a correct response comes in, the more points it receives. Kahoots are easy to create, students enjoy them, and the itemized data they collect can be very informative.
Quizizz is a free service that allows teachers to collective data in the format of a competitive game. The entire game happens on the student's screen so there is no need to look at a projected image on the teacher's computer as with some other services. Games are easy to create and a user community exists from which games can be duplicated and modified. Games can also be played as homework assignments. Data can be saved to Excel or Google Drive.
Socrative is a free service that allows teachers to collect formative data in a couple of different ways. It even has a built in game mode that allows students to answer a number of questions at their own pace while collecting data for the teacher to review later.
Plickers is an interesting approach to having a student response system. It trades in student remotes for paper cards that a teacher can scan with his/her mobile device. If you're looking for a different way to collect formative data it may be worth it to check out Plickers.
Quizalize is a free service that allows teachers to collect data in a competitive game format. Students are put into two teams that compete for the high score. Teachers and students both receive helpful reports at the end of an assessment. Games can be played live, or assigned as homework.
Formative is a great tool that allows you to collect real-time formative assessment data in a variety ways. What makes it unique is that you can have students draw, model, or label their answers in addition to the more common multiple choice and true false style of questions.
